Skoda’s Electric Vehicle Plans for India Delayed, Enyaq Likely First BEV

Skoda’s Electric Vehicle Plans for India Delayed, Enyaq Likely First BEV

Skoda BEVs for India to Take Longer Than Expected

Skoda has slowed down its electric vehicle roadmap for the Indian market, indicating that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) will arrive later than initially anticipated. While the brand had secured approvals to introduce its first electric SUV in India nearly two years ago, shifting policy dynamics and regulatory uncertainty have led to a cautious reassessment.

Enyaq Still Tipped as First Electric Offering

The Enyaq remains the most likely candidate to become Skoda’s first BEV for India. It was earlier planned as a fully imported model, but the automaker is now holding back due to concerns around future government policies and evolving Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms.

This approach aligns with Skoda’s previously stated strategy of testing the market with imported models before committing to local production.

Top-Down Strategy Remains Intact

Skoda continues to believe in a top-down entry strategy for electric vehicles. The idea is to introduce premium imported BEVs first, understand market response, and then move toward more accessible, locally produced electric SUVs.

Targeting the Mid-Size EV Segment

The long-term goal is to launch a mid-size electric SUV positioned alongside models such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Curvv EV, and Kia Carens Clavis EV. However, despite an increase in available options, sales volumes in this segment remain modest.

Skoda is reportedly evaluating a compact electric SUV concept as a potential localized product, but such a model is unlikely to arrive before 2027.

Charging Network and Dealer Readiness Underway

Even as product launches are delayed, Skoda has confirmed that groundwork is being laid behind the scenes. The company is actively working on charging infrastructure planning and EV-ready dealership setups, ensuring it can move quickly if market conditions improve.

Group-Level EV Strategy

This measured approach is also expected to influence Volkswagen’s electric vehicle plans in India, with both brands likely to follow a similar timeline and strategy under the same group umbrella.

For now, Skoda appears focused on preparation rather than acceleration, waiting for clearer policy direction and stronger market momentum before fully committing to electric mobility in India.
