The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a strong offensive against the Congress-led Karnataka government, accusing it of allowing large-scale corruption in the state’s Excise Department. The party claimed that irregularities involving thousands of crores are taking place under the current administration.

Opposition Targets State Leadership

Leader of the Opposition alleged that the Excise Department, which operates under the Finance Ministry, has been converted into a systematic revenue-generation channel through fixed annual targets.

He held Chief Minister  directly accountable, stating that corruption had become institutionalised within the department.

Ashok referred to the recent arrest of senior excise officials, including a Deputy Commissioner, a Superintendent, and a police constable, by The officials were allegedly caught while accepting a bribe of ₹25 lakh.

According to the BJP leader, this incident exposes deep-rooted corruption and reflects a larger pattern rather than an isolated case.

Allegations of Bribery in Liquor Licensing

The BJP alleged that bribes are being systematically collected for issuing various liquor licences, including bar licences, retail licences, and microbrewery permits.

Money Trail Claims

Ashok claimed that illicit funds allegedly move “from table to table” within the department, eventually reaching senior political leadership. He asserted that the scale of the alleged scam could run into hundreds or even thousands of crores.

Demand for Minister’s Resignation

The BJP demanded the immediate resignation of Excise Minister . Ashok warned that retaining the minister would signal acceptance of what he described as a massive commission-based system.

Charges of Hypocrisy and Misuse of Funds

The opposition leader also accused the Congress government of moral hypocrisy, alleging that while public intoxication was being encouraged, corruption continued unchecked behind the scenes.

Election Funding Allegations

Ashok further claimed that excise revenues were allegedly diverted to fund election campaigns in other states. He called for a thorough and independent investigation into the department’s financial operations.

The allegations have intensified political tensions in Karnataka, with the ruling party yet to issue a detailed response to the charges.
