Mamata Banerjee Condemns BJP Leaders’ Remarks, Calls for Arrests
West Bengal Chief Minister has strongly criticised recent remarks made by leaders of the regarding Prophet Muhammad, describing them as hate speech that threatens social harmony and public peace.
Banerjee said the comments have contributed to rising tension and unrest, warning that such statements weaken India’s secular foundation and encourage division among communities.
Remarks Termed as Hate Speech
The controversy began after BJP spokesperson made comments about Prophet Muhammad during a televised debate. Following nationwide backlash, the BJP suspended Sharma and expelled Delhi unit media head Naveen Kumar Jindal for supporting remarks shared on social media.
Banerjee said that such statements go beyond political disagreement and amount to hate speech that can trigger violence and disturb communal harmony.
Demand for Immediate Action
In a series of public statements, the West Bengal chief minister demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the remarks, stating that strict legal action is necessary to protect national unity and prevent further unrest.
She also alleged that the individuals involved have a history of spreading misinformation and making provocative statements, including past claims related to incidents in West Bengal that were later found to be false.
Appeal for Peace and Unity
While condemning the remarks, Banerjee appealed to citizens from all religions, castes, and communities to maintain peace and restraint. She urged people not to fall prey to provocation and to prioritise harmony in the larger public interest.
She emphasised that social unity must not be compromised due to irresponsible political statements and called on people to uphold India’s tradition of coexistence and mutual respect.
Protests Erupt Across West Bengal
Following the controversial remarks, protests were reported in several parts of West Bengal. Demonstrators took to the streets to express anger, with some incidents involving road blockades and disruption of public movement.
Reacting to the protests, Banerjee said that the state should not suffer due to what she described as communal politics pursued for narrow political gains.
Call to Avoid Disruption in Bengal
The chief minister urged protesters to refrain from blocking national highways and disrupting daily life in the state. She stated that law and order must be maintained and that Bengal should not become a platform for political publicity over issues originating elsewhere.
Banerjee reiterated that accountability should be fixed through legal channels and stressed that peace and stability in West Bengal remain her government’s top priority.
